Location

The 200-acre campus is located near the center of Greensboro, the state’s third largest city. The greater Triad area, comprising Greensboro, Winston-Salem and High Point, has a population approaching 1 million. Greensboro has been rated by a national survey as the nation’s second most attractive place to live, based on climate, health, transportation, crime rate and prosperity. It is the home of five major colleges and universities. Situated midway between Washington, DC, and Atlanta, Georgia, Greensboro is one hour’s drive from the Research Triangle, two hours from the mountains, and about three hours from the Outer Banks and other beaches. It is a dynamic city, offering a splendid setting for a university. In return, UNCG has enriched Greensboro with its widely diversified academic community for more than one hundred years.

Profile

The student body of the University of North Carolina, Greensboro (UNCG), is comprised of approximately 18,500 students. Seventy-five percent of the students are undergraduates. While 89 percent are from North Carolina, students come from 46 other states and over 90 foreign countries. Minority enrollment is 25 percent, including 20 percent black students. The ratio of faculty to students is 1:16.7. About 30 percent of the students live on campus.

Campus facilities include the ten-story air-conditioned Jackson Library, two gymnasiums, Elliott University Center, the 2,330-seat Aycock Auditorium, campus art center, state-of-the-art music building, and a new baseball stadium and student recreation fields.

Academic Notes

  • Among the strongest academic areas at UNCG are business and economics, classical studies, English, geography, health and human performance, human environmental sciences, psychology, and religious studies.

Academic Programs not available to exchange students

Nursing and graduate level English courses. Also, there are several classes within the Media Studies Department that are not available to exchange students.

Orientation

UNCG’s week-long orientation for all international exchange students takes place a week before classes start. Students will participate in information sessions from registering for classes to learning about a student’s visa requirements to opening a bank account. Various activities will be scheduled at UNCG and in the community including tours, picnics and social activities with American students. The week of orientation is an excellent opportunity to meet new people and become familiar with the university before classes begin.

Pre-Registration: Exchange students will be required, upon admission, to use the Course Search in order to determine what courses they wish to attend. Pre-Registration for courses occurs before the students’ arrival. More information about pre-registration will be included in the acceptance package.

Housing & Meal Plan

On-Campus Housing: Most exchange students in Greensboro choose to live on-campus due to its tremendous convenience, diversity of accommodations and general value. Phillips-Hawkins is the most popular housing for exchange students and internationals, in general. You’ll also have the option of living in the student apartments (called “Tower Village,” or “Spring Garden Apartments.” These more European-style accommodations include single rooms and a shared kitchen/bathroom).
