Important Insurance Note

• In the past, UNC students have been able to waive the German National Insurance requirement by providing GeoBlue insurance policy details (insurance policy UNC study abroad students are required to purchase from their home school) to the host university for review.

• After experiencing several cases of exchange students having inadequate insurance coverage and/or having the pay high upfront costs for medical support during their time abroad, the decision was made to no longer encourage this type of waiver. Baden-Württemberg Universities now strongly recommend (and some require) all UNC students enroll in German health insurance to ensure adequate coverage.

• Additionally, due to the gaps in the some aspects of the German health insurance coverage (ie. medical evacuation, repatriation and mental health coverage), the UNC System office has recommended all UNC students participating in this program enroll in both GeoBlue and the German Health insurance.

• UNC students will receive information on the German insurance providers prior to arrival and/or during the Welcome Week at each BW University. There are about 160 companies Germany-wide. The costs are standardized and approximately € 85-95 per month. For additional guidance on insurance, please contact the study abroad coordinator at your home university.
