The University of North Carolina at Asheville is the designated undergraduate liberal arts university in the 16-campus University of North Carolina System. An outstanding learning community, UNC Asheville is committed to providing an excellent liberal arts experience for its nearly 4,000 undergraduate and graduate students from 37 states and 28 countries through challenging academic programs, exemplary teaching, and meaningful and diverse co-curricular activities.

From biochemistry to music, from psychology to management, UNC Asheville encourages each student to explore further and dig deeper. Our special programs and activities are designed to stretch thinking skills, broaden horizons, and provide valuable real-world experience that will complement and intensify the classroom learning long after graduation. It’s an educational approach that prepares students for successful careers and successful lives.

UNC Asheville kindles learning by offering students an intellectually rigorous education that builds critical thinking and workforce skills to last a lifetime. Small class size, award-winning faculty, and a nationally acclaimed undergraduate research program foster innovation as well as recognition.

The cornerstone of a liberal arts education is the ability to explore the connections between many different subjects and their options. Learning at UNC Asheville extends well beyond the classroom walls. Focusing on undergraduate studies, we help students dig into learning, whether they participate in faculty-mentored research projects, undertake career-related internships, study abroad, or join service projects aimed at improving the quality of life at home and around the world. We encourage everyone to seek challenges, seize opportunities, and become a doer as well as a thinker.

UNC Asheville offers more than 30 majors leading to the bachelor of arts, bachelor of science and master of liberal arts degrees. The University of North Carolina at Asheville is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award baccalaureate degrees and the Masters of Liberal Arts degree. The Management and Accountancy Department is AACSB Accredited.

COPLAC: UNC Asheville is the headquarters for the Council of Public Liberal Arts Colleges, a 27-member organization of state-supported liberal arts colleges that recognize the importance of liberal arts and sciences education for success in a complex global society.

Campus Life

Residence Halls: 39 percent of degree-seeking undergraduates live on campus, while another third live within a one-mile radius of campus.

Student Groups: More than 60 clubs and organizations, ranging from honor societies to intramural sports

Intercultural Center & Office of Multicultural Student Programs: The Intercultural Center houses comfortable spaces for meetings, social events and programs involving such diverse groups as Alliance, Black Students Association, International Student Association, Asian Students in Asheville, Herman@s Orgullos@s en Las Americas (HOLA) and Hillel.

The Sherrill Center: Wilma M. Sherrill Center is the university’s newest and largest facility, offering a range of academic and outreach programs focused on healthy living and wellness promotion. The Sherrill Center includes an expansive fitness center, a biofeedback lab and meditation room, and the Wellness Café.

Kimmel Arena: The new Kimmel Arena, which is part of the Sherrill Center, can seat up to 3,800 people for concerts, commencements, convocations, lectures, intercollegiate men’s and women’s basketball games, health fairs, and community events.

UNC Asheville ranks seventh in the nation among Public Liberal Arts Colleges, and is the only North Carolina institution listed among National Liberal Arts Colleges whose students graduate with the least amount of debt. – U.S. News & World Report’s “Best Colleges 2014” (September 2013)

UNC Asheville offers a “top-notch academic experience,” and, based on student survey responses, Asheville is ranked 13th in the nation on the “Town-Gown Relations are Great” list.
