My topic is document design, specifically looking at how document design can be presented in an ethical manner. My definition of document design is the choices one makes in how to present their document so the message of the document is as clear and effective as possible. There’s several important elements of document design such as typography, use of headings, color choice, arrangement, and many others. I wanted to specifically focus on how these principal elements of document design can be used ethically. I also wanted to understand what ethical considerations should be made while designing a document.
I chose the WRIT 1001 syllabus to be one of my examples of document design. This document employs several key elements of document design and web design such as bulleted lists, hyperlink attachments, integration of charts, and use of headings. Color is also used by making the headings and some of the charts maroon. This color choice also activates the schema of a UofM student because maroon is one of our school colors. Overall, this is a very effective example of document design.
Another example of document design is this flyer I got in the mail from Discover.
This flyer has several interesting elements of document design. It has visuals that help explain the surrounding text. Also, the text is chunked into these little boxes. This makes it easier to read and understand. Headings of different colors and boldface are both used throughout the flyer to organize information. The arrows on the document help vertically align the information and give readers a clear path of what to read next. There's also a "call to action" at the bottom, so there's a next step if readers are interested in the information provided in the flyer.
