Technical editing is more involved than simply reading through text and marking up pages with special characters. In fact, during this writers research, it was found that some hiring managers will have the potential employee complete editing tests* in order to prove their capability. As will be reported on my summary page, it has been shown that hiring managers are often looking for different things during and at the conclusion of their tests. It appears that editing technical information has become something of a science. Attention has been paid to what editing courses are teaching as well as how students prepare comments to writers. The field of technical editing is substantial. There are many wonderful studies on the topic and the four that I chose should hopefully show even a minor scope of diversity within this specialty. The texts I use focus on testing methods, what the most important characteristics are when editing, how students do while editing comprehensive texts, and lastly, what students are learning may not be of benefit when working out in the tech savvy workplaces of today.
It is not easy to find actual sample editing tests provided by companies, however, I am including a link to a quiz provided by The New York Times editor, Philip B. Corbett. He provides numerous editing quizzes to test our copy editing skills.
