Section Meeting points are given based on attendance or completion of the alternate assignment on-time. Points are awarded based on the following:
Student does not attend Section Meeting AND does not complete the alternate assignment by the due date = NO POINTS
Student attends 20% or less of the Section Meeting (coming late or leaving early) = NO POINTS
Student attends 50% of the Section Meeting = HALF POINTS
Student attends 90% or more of the Section Meeting = FULL POINTS
Student does not attend the Section Meeting BUT completes the alternate assignment by the due date = FULL POINTS
We understand that at some point during the semester, SLs may be sick and unable to attend their in-person section meetings. Please follow the steps below if you should find yourself sick and unable to teach:
Please reach out to your TL and your TL team via Slack, text, GroupMe, etc. to see if anyone on your team can cover your section meeting.
If no one on your TL team can cover, your TL or you should post in the OSE Slack Channel to see if any other SL is able to cover your section meeting.
If you feel well enough to teach via Zoom, you are allowed to communicate with your Section and host your section meeting virtually. Hybrid sections should prioritize their students still being in-person
The last option (should only be used if all other options have been explored) is to email your section that you are unwell and need to cancel class. Send them the slides from class and ask them to complete the Exit Ticket as normal. *Students will not lose points if an SL does not communicate with them ahead of time.
Wondering what to say to students when they email you to say they're missing/have missed class? Below are two templates to help you respond to them. Students should only be given the alternate assignment if they were absent from class for a legitimate absence per University Policy. Feel free to tweak it to fit your needs.
Legitimate Absence
Hello [STUDENT NAME],
Thank you for letting me know. I have attached the details for the Alternate Assignment.
Please double-check the class dates and make arrangements to attend the remaining section meetings this semester.
Let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
Best wishes,
[YOUR NAME]
Non-Legitimate Absence
Hello [STUDENT NAME],
Thank you for letting me know. Unfortunately, this is not an approved absence per University Policy so I am unable to give you the make-up assignment for this class session.
Let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
Best wishes,
[YOUR NAME]
For each Section Meeting week, an alternate assignment will be provided by the Lead Instructor. This assignment will be on Canvas but will be hidden from student view. You can copy and paste the text of the assignment from Canvas into an email and invite the student to email their reflection directly to you. Once the Section Meeting is complete, email the alternate assignment to the students who were not in attendance. Let them know that they were missed in the meeting, inquire if everything is ok, and let them know they have until Sunday at midnight to complete the alternate assignment. (As always, if a student reaches out prior to that deadline asking for additional time, you are allowed to adjust that deadline based on the student's situation.)
Ice breakers are a great way to get to know one another! This document is a long list of compiled ice breakers, developmental activities, active games, Diversity Equity & Inclusion activities, and closing activities that you can do with your group. Many of these activities can be altered and can be done via Zoom.
You are also welcome to hold your meetings and do activities outside (weather permitting!).
