You are required to meet individually with each student in your section once per semester prior to Spring Break. Due to COVID-19 you may choose if you would prefer to hold these meetings in-person or via Zoom. We recommend holding these meetings as early in the semester as possible to allow you the most time to get to know your students.
20 minutes
Please dress appropriately (remember, you are representing OSE and CLA) and, if you are Zooming, have a professional background (please do not Zoom from your bed). You can download a virtual U of M background at: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1On42nUs7jowl_jxyyZFp5jRDjwefyMIe
If you are meeting in-person, please meet in a public location that is accessible to anyone (e.g. coffee shop). Do NOT meet in your residence or a private meeting room.
If you are meeting virtually, please have a professional background (do not Zoom from your bed)
Students (and SLs!) must cancel within 24 hours of their scheduled time unless in extreme emergency
We have provided a suggested outline for what to discuss during your 1:1. However, feel free to go where the flow of the conversation leads. Remember to keep the conversation appropriate.
You are a mandated reporter. If your student confides in you about sexual assault, abuse of any vulnerable population, or self-harm, please report this to ProStaff immediately after the meeting. If it is an emergency, call 911 (and contact Jen via text on her cell phone).
Keep confidentiality and FERPA in mind
Do not record your 1:1 sessions
You CAN write down a few things for your OWN records for you to reference later if you feel it would be helpful to you. These should be kept in a location only you can access (e.g. GoogleDrive) and should be destroyed upon conclusion of the academic year.
Student arrives on time and actively participates in the 1:1 session Full Points
Student cancels more than 24 hours before 1:1 AND attends rescheduled meeting Full Points
Student cancels less than 24 hours before 1:1 AND attends rescheduled meeting Half Points
Student does not show up to scheduled 1:1 BUT attends rescheduled meeting Half Points
Student cancels with less than 24 hours notice AND does not attend a rescheduled meeting Zero Points
Student does not show up to meeting and does not reschedule Zero Points
OSE does not tolerate students who continuously stand up our student staff. SLs are only required to reschedule with the student once if they cancel or do not show up to a scheduled meeting. After that, SLs are allowed to give that student a zero and are not obligated to accommodate that student for them to complete their 1:1 requirement.
1:1 meetings can be hard and awkward. We're here to help! Here's a suggested outline for your 1:1 meeting. However, feel free to browse through the additional questions below to help you get started.
