Students gain access to Handshake shortly after officially enrolling at the University (matriculating).
To activate their account, they need to login to Handshake with their UMN credentials. Share this URL with students to login: umn.joinhandshake.com.
Once activated, students receive a series of onboarding emails from Handshake:
After 30 min: Fill out your profile
After 7 days: View jobs
After 20 days: Apply to jobs
Degree-seeking students, PSEO students, and alumni from all five campuses gain access to Handshake shortly after matriculation. *Post-docs do not have access unless they are in a traineeship and not classified as an employee. They usually have one of these academic plans: three academic plan codes associated with their employer ID: 071800008, 0041PRD18, or 0718PRD08.
Student and alumni accounts are imported into Handshake through a secure nightly sync of student/alumni data files, which includes student name, college, major, and school year.
Students loose access if they are unenrolled for 2 academic semesters and did NOT graduate.
In the case of a student death, report it to CSA. They will report it to Ben Sietsema. As soon as the date of death (DOD) is logged in PeopleSoft, the student record will be removed from the nightly data sync. In the meantime, go to a students profile and change their notification settings so that no more email or push notifications are sent out. You can do this by 'viewing the profile as the user.' Don’t archive and 'exclude their profile from sync', because their profile wouldn't be deleted in that case.
Labels allow you to organize your students based on custom groupings for data collection, email outreach, and building resume packets. You can label students by cohort, demographic, major, etc. Learn more about labels.
*Note, you will want to create 'normal' labels for students. There are three different types of labels: normal, public, and system. System labels are only for IT purposes. Public labels can be seen by students. Normal labels can only be seen by staff.
We also have two normal labels used by all colleges:
No show - This label should be added to a student's account when they do not show up for an on-campus interview.
Resume needs revision - This label is used by offices that review student resumes. This label should be added to a student’s document review if their resume is not approved.
