Creating Saved Searches and Reviewing Events
* Events should be reviewed twice per week.
Creating a saved search for Events will drive the events that are associated with your college to your pending bins. Note that virtual events are not associated with a specific career office and are reviewed by all career centers. You will create two seperate saved searches.
How to create your pending events bin: this is your primary pending bin. These are all the events that have not been reviewed by a career services staff member at UMN.
Select Events in the black left navigation bar
Select Pending on the left side of the page
Select: ‘Career Center” > your college and Career Services Administration
Select Employer Host Industry and select your college’s industries based on Handshake: Major Group/Job Function/Employer Industry by College.
Select the Not Lable: "pending - under review". This ensures you do not look at events others have already been attended to.
Select: the plus + sign next to ‘Saved Search’ at the top of the page. Create a name for your search and a description (if desired).
How to create your ‘pending - employer response needed’ events bin: this pending bin is for events that have been reviewed by a career services staff and need more information. These events did not abide by one or more of our processes, or have enough information to be approved or declined, so they go into an in-progress bin.
*Note: Be sure you make a note to follow up with these events 2 weeks after you’ve reviewed them. If you have not heard back from the employer, decline the event and make a note (not a comment) as to the reason for your decline.
Select Events in the black left navigation bar
Select Pending on the left side of the page
Select: ‘Career Center” > your college and Career Services Administration
Select Label: "pending - under review". This ensures you do not look at events others have already attended to.
Select: the plus + sign next to ‘Saved Search’ at the top of the page. Create a name for your search and a description (if desired).
Approve the event if it is a fit for Handshake (e.g. professional and aligns with the majors offered at UMN).
Go into events on Handshake and search for Pending + Virtual
Scan the results on each page and look for companies you don't recognize or titles that look suspect. Review these manually.
For all events from large, reputable companies with expected titles, bulk approve without manually vetting each one.
Expected titles are day-in the life events, what it's like to work here, resume workshops, interviewing advice, panels or advice about working in a certain industry, etc.
*Note: Ask yourself "Does the event look like a good opportunity for our students? Would they be able to attend?"
*Note: Events are not limited by geographic location, rather they should be reviewed by their alignment with Handshake policies and processes (e.g. part-time event located in California is not a fit, because it would take students away from classes).
If your office is selected, but the event is better suited in a different college:
Change the hosting office to the correct college and in the notes section, tag the person(s) from the college you are reassigning the event to, by adding a + then their email address (e.g. +kovar051@umn.edu)
Steps to take if more information is needed:
If any information is questionable, leave the event in the pending bin, add the label: ‘pending - under review’’ then follow up by:
Emailing (through comments) using the Event - more information needed email template as your guide.
If the employer does not respond in 2 weeks, change the status to ‘declined,’ and make a note.
Decline
If the event does not meet Handshake processes or policies, change the event status to decline and send the Events - Declined not aligned with my institution’s standards. email template through the comments section.
