Experiences are an optional feature in Handshake your career department can use to manage for-credit internships. As of December 2022, the College of Liberal Arts, Career & Internship Services (CCAPS, CDES, and CFANS), CSE (for co-ops, not internships), and CBS (only for an internship course) use the Experiences module in Handshake.
To get started with Experiences, take the Handshake Academy Experiences Training course and see Handshake’s Experiences Articles.
When using Experiences, please keep in mind:
Comments are email communications that are visible to the end-user (students, employer contacts, and faculty). Comments are NOT internal notes.
To ensure continuity of communication to our employer partners and across the university, this universal internship site agreement should be used by all departments for both credit-bearing and non-credit bearing experiential opportunities, such as internships, service-learning, etc...
Career offices have the option to create normal labels to assist with filtering and reporting on your career offices internships. Use this naming convention: “experiences - college acronym”. For example, the College of Liberal Arts label would read as, “experiences - CLA”.
Your office may wish to use labels in one or both of the following ways:
To identify contacts and/or faculty supervisors associated with your office. In this instance your office super user will select:
Type = Normal
Used for = contacts
Label = “experiences - college acronym”
To identify which students are able to see and apply to the Experiences for your college:
Type = Normal
Used for = user
Label = “experiences - college acronym”
Note: if a site supervisor is a user, then you would use the user label for them, as well as the student.
Permission label: Due to the number of offices using the Experiences module, UMN does not use permission labels to limit access. This section pertains to all UMN students across Handshake. If a given student does not meet the label requirement, then they will not be able to submit an Experience.
