Math
What makes MATH classes at WHSS amazing?
SPIRALING - promotes deeper learning and re-visits topics in the grade 9 classes
INTERACTIVE - students are not fixed at their desks all period every day
TEAM BUILDING TRIBES - working together and helping peers
Do you require a grade 12 math credit for a post-secondary program?
MAP 4C (Foundations for College Math) - is the go-to course, providing skills such as personal finance and data management
Pre-requisite: MBF3C
MCT4C (Mathematics for College Technology) looks at more theoretical principles and is only recommended if your program specifically requires it. Note: pre-requisite is Grade 11M (MCF3M)
* Powerline, electrical, and engineering programs require MCT4C.
MDM4U (Data Management Statistics) is the preferred Grade 12 University level Math course for 4-year degree programs at College & University that are not math/science based. Ex) Nursing, Arts, Social Sciences & Humanities, HIstory, etc.
Pre-requisite: MCF3M
MHF4U (Advanced Functions) is a full & fast-paced continuation of 3U Math. All post-seconday degree programs related to Math, Science, Engineering, Business require this course.
Pre-requisite: MCF3U
MCV4U (Calculus & Vectors).
Pre-requisite: MHF4U
All post-seconday degree programs related to Math, Science, Engineering, Business require this course.
Look at the courses you will be taking in your first year at post-secondary - if you will be required to Calculus, be sure to take MCV4U in high school.
Check the OUInfo website to see which 4U Math your program wants you take.
Tips for Grade 9 De-Streamed students choosing applied or academic or essential Math
Academic
Curriculum is delivered at a faster pace than applied in order to cover more concepts per unit
Focus on theory & abstract thinking
More challenging tasks/higher order thinking/problem solving
Class size maximum is 31
After grade 10 Academic Math, the common pathway is to take 11U level Math followed by 12U Math courses.
Applied
Curriculum is similar but concepts are not explored as in-depth as academic
Focus on skills and practical applications using concrete examples
Class size maximum is 23
After Gr 10 Applied Math, the common pathway is to take College level Math
However, students can still get to University Math after Applied Math:
Grade 10 Applied Math students can take Gr 11 Mixed then Gr 12U Data Management.
Also, Gr 10 Applied Math students can then take Gr 11M + Gr 12 MCT4C which leads to MHF4U
Workplace Level (Grade 11)
Students who struggle in Grade 9 De-streamed Math can opt to move directly to MEL3E (Grade 11 Workplace Math) followed by MEL4E (grade 12 workplace Math).
Workplace Math courses are very practical. There will never be a day where a student will ask "when will I ever use this math again"? Topics include: estimating and calculating percents (discounts, taxes, gratuities); G1/G2 Driver topics (demerit point system); Earning money (Salary, Hourly wages, Gross Pay, deductions, Net pay); Interest, loans, credit cards
Essentials (Locally Developed)
Compulsory Essential credit courses (aka Locally Developed) for students who need more flexibility and support and not working at grade level
Focus on basic skills
Must be recommended by Special Education team
Class size maximum is 15
