• Starting in September 2022, all Grade 9 compulsory courses have become de-streamed

• Students, who in the past would have chosen applied- or academic-level programming, should now choose the de-streamed level

• In Grade 10, students and families can then choose the best pathway based on achievement and future goals

• Students are supported by their teachers and special education accommodations can be applied

Academic

• Curriculum is delivered at a faster pace than applied in order to cover more concepts per unit

• Focus on theory & abstract thinking

• More challenging tasks/higher order thinking/problem solving

• Class size maximum is 31

Applied

• Curriculum is similar but concepts are not explored as in-depth as academic

• Focus on skills and practical applications using concrete examples 

• Class size maximum is 23

Essentials (Locally Developed)

• Compulsory credit courses (aka Locally Developed) for students who need more flexibility and support

• Focus on basic skills  

• Must be recommended by Special Education team

• Class size maximum is 15

University Level (U) - Courses that prepare you for university or college degree programs.

College Level (C) - Courses that prepare you for college.

Mixed Level (M) - Courses that prepare you for university and college.

Workplace level (E) - Courses that prepare you for the workplace.

Open level (O) - Elective courses that are of interest to you and help support your learning in a particular area.
