International Students and Scholar Services (ISSS) is dedicated to supporting international students and scholars throughout their time at UCSC. They provide guidance on visa regulations, cultural adjustment, and other important matters.
An international student would need a F-1 or J-1 visa sponsored by UC Santa Cruz for full-time study. Once you accept the offer letter, you have to request/transfer your I-20 document. One can get detailed guided steps from ISSS New Student website. More information on preparing you for your arrival at UCSC can be found in the “Pre-Arrival Orientation” found in iGlobal.
All the international students with F1/J1 visa are required to take the international student orientation (ISO) hosted by ISSS and takes place on the UCSC main campus.
Obtaining a Social Security Number (SSN) or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) is crucial in the U.S. because it serves as a unique identifier for tax and employment purposes. As an international student, you are recommended to get an SSN instead of a ITIN. You can apply for it here.
An SSN/ITIN is also often required to open bank accounts, secure utilities, and apply for certain services, making it an essential tool for financial and legal transactions. An SSN also helps in building credit history, which is important for future financial activities such as renting an apartment or applying for loans.
