Failure to comply with this two step process will cost you $5,000 per quarter your second year!!!
If you are already considered in-state for tuition purposes, or if you are an international student, then you can disregard this section.
Out-of-state students must obtain California residency by the start of their second year. This requires you to take action early in your first year.
STEP 1: You have to do this before the end of the Fall Quarter
As soon as possible, you should:
• Obtain a California driver license or state ID card;
• Register any vehicles in California;
• Register to vote in California (if you are a U.S. citizen);
• Take necessary steps to relinquish other ties that you may have to your former state.
Step 2: Submit the required forms in the appropriate window
The Graduate Program Coordinator and the Residency Officer will contact you about when you can submit this paperwork. This will be during the Summer term at the end of your first year (likely in early June).
The necessary forms can be found here, https://www.physics.ucsc.edu/academic-programs/grads/handbook/residency-reclassification.html
All first year graduate students are required to seek residency reclassification (if applicable). The Department will not cover the costs of non-resident tuition for students in their second year if they could have been reclassified. The student will bear the cost, approximately $15,000 in non-resident tuition for an academic year.
This is a two step process, detailed here.
During your first quarter, establish ties with the state of California. Change your driver's license, voter's registration, vehicle registration, bank account, etc. grads.html
During your first summer, submit your Petition for Change of Legal Residence.
