Any international students who wish to be considered for Teaching Assistant opportunities must score a 26 or higher on the Spoken Word portion of the internet-based test (https://www.gradadmissions.ucsc.edu/international-applicants).
If one does not meet this requirement then one must take action prior to the Fall otherwise Physics cannot provide a TA assignment.
Options:
1. Retake the TOEFL, obtain the required score, and resubmit your official scores to UCSC.
2. Enroll in the Graduate Preparatory Program (GPP). https://global.ucsc.edu/opportunities/gradprep/housingmeals.html The Department will bear the $1,200 cost of tuition for the program, but you will be responsible for everything else.
Graduate Prep Program
The Graduate Preparation Program is a four-week intensive non-credit course offered prior to the Fall quarter which is open to all current and newly admitted international graduate students. It focuses on English for Academic Purposes (EAP), academic skills, and cultural orientation. The program is offered in collaboration with Graduate Division and Global Engagement.

The IVO Questionnaire collects information on visa-related issues from the scientific community. The data collected through the questionnaire will be used to track trends and report urgent visa cases in the sciences to the U.S. Department of State.

You have applied for an F-1, J-1, H1-B, O-1, or other visa related to scientific work or study for science-related activities in the United States, AND your application has been undergoing administrative processing for 60 days since your visa interview.
International Dissertation Research Fellowship (IDRF): as an international graduate student you generate both in-state and out-of-state tuition (Non-Resident Tuition, NRT) each quarter. Your TA/GSR/Fellowship covers the cost of in-state tuition. Here is the current practice which covers your NRT:
Year 1. The Department pays NRT
Year 2. & 3. The Graduate Division pays NRT
Years 4. & 5. & 6. UCOP pays NRT if you have Advanced to Candidacy by the end of your third year.
Optional Practical Training (OPT): Optional Practical Training (OPT) allows F-1 students to be authorized for off-campus employment, typically for one year. Students in valid F-1 status may apply for OPT to gain work experience that is directly related to your field of study.
