Unplugged: Scratch Charades

This unplugged activity orients students to block-based programming and the Scratch programming environment by introducing color-coded block categories, block shapes, and the basic blocks used in most scripts. Students learn by playing a Scratch version of charades and building scripts using printed Scratch blocks. In each group, there will be an Actor, Director, and 2 CodeBuilders.

Students will model how components of the Scratch platform work together.
Students will debug a script based on observed outcomes

Language Objectives

Students will be able to reflect and discuss challenges about an activity.
Students can explain similarities between two events; Sprites and Computers (Computer Science).

Vocabulary

Scratch Terms

Sprite: A media object that performs actions on the stage in a Scratch project.
Stage: The background of a Scratch project. The stage can have scripts, backdrops (costumes), and sounds, similar to a sprite.
Code Blocks: pieces of code or commands in a puzzle-piece form
Script: code put together in a specific order or sequence.

CS Terms

Computer Science: A field in which people use the power of computers to solve big problems. This includes how to create the physical parts (hardware) and how to make computers think (software).
Computer: A device that takes in an input, processes and stores information, and provides an output.
