Land-Based Learning

CMASTE Workshop Series Presents:

The Four Seasons: Learning with the Land at Miquelon Lake

Indigenous-led learning with the land for teachers of Science in Alberta

This workshop has SOLD OUT. Thank you for your support!

This land-based learning professional development series offers K-12 teachers of science opportunities to work with Indigenous knowledge-keepers and/or elders on the land at Miquelon Lake. The new research station there offers a base from which the outdoor activities will take place. Teachers will experience land-based practices and work to understand Indigenous perspectives and how these might shape and guide their future practice. Teachers will develop some strategies and resources for use in their own contexts with the guidance of Indigenous students and facilitators. Each season brings opportunities to experience what the land has to offer, and offers us unique abilities to experience the land.

Planned activities include:*

◈ Hide tanning ◈ Meat drying ◈ Making Pemmican ◈ Berry Picking ◈ Tracking/Animal Sign and Sound Identification ◈

 ◈ Snaring (Rabbits) ◈ Canoeing ◈ Snowshoeing ◈ Trail/Forest Hiking/Trekking ◈ Introduction to some Cree language ◈

◈ Use of the new telescope at the Hesje Observatory (evening winter session) ◈

These activities are subject to change depending upon weather and availability

Land-based learning happens outdoors, so this may involve working in adverse environmental conditions (cold, rain, insects, campfire smoke, etc.). We will endeavour to work with and around the weather and conditions where possible but participants should be prepared for outdoor activities for extended periods. The Miquelon Lake Research Station has excellent facilities, with a comfortable classroom, kitchen, washrooms, and work spaces, and is supplied by excellent internet service, where we will spend part of each day.
