In our program, a minimum of eight weeks of ambulatory clinics is mandatory. Two weeks are mandatory at the PGY1 level, two weeks are mandatory at the PGY 2 level, and four weeks are mandatory at the PGY3 level. However, more time can be scheduled as a selective. These clinics will be a mixture of General Internal Medicine and other specialties.
The PGY1 and PGY2 Ambulatory Clinics are scheduled by electcim@ualberta.ca. Your preferences can be recorded on the AMBC FORM forwarded via email approximately one month prior to your rotation. PGY3 residents organize their own ambulatory clinics. For more information, follow the section below.
Dr. Daniel Sawler supervises this rotation for Internal Medicine residents. The ambulatory care rotation may include traditional clinics at any of the major teaching sites, specialty physician offices willing to supervise residents in their clinic, and/or full-day outreach clinics that are within a 1-hour drive of Edmonton. The intent is for a resident to do one to no more than four different specialty areas during a given 2-week rotation.
Dr. Elliott Sprague supervises this rotation for Internal Medicine PGY3s. The options are more defined and they are coordinated by the MEPC at the Grey Nuns site. These clinics are conducted by staff who work at the Grey Nuns Hospital.
By the end of this rotation, residents will be graded as “progressing as expected” in each of the following and in the Global Rating. The expected level of performance in the PGY1 year is Interpreter level, PGY2 is Manager Level, PGY3 is Educator Level (See Overall Goals & Objectives).
Data Collection and Clinical Reasoning: The resident appropriately collects and synthesizes clinical information to formulate a primary diagnosis and appropriate differential.
Clinical Decision Making: The resident is able to make the appropriate and cost-effective investigation and management decisions based on the context of the case and the best available evidence.
Patient and Family Communication: The resident communicates with and about patients and family in a patient-centred manner.
Documentation and Verbal Presentation: The resident appropriately documents and presents cases for new consults, progress notes, and handover of care (succinctly organized, prioritized, summarized) including answering the question asked by the referring service.
Patient Advocacy: The resident addresses disease prevention, risk factor reduction, and health surveillance when indicated.
This rotation is done during Core of the Discipline and is an ideal learning environment for the following EPAs:
CD2: Assessing, diagnosing, and managing patients with complex chronic diseases
CD3: Providing internal medicine consultation to other clinical services
CD7: Discussing serious and/or complex aspects of care with patients, families, and caregivers
Breaking Bad News
CD10: Implementing health promotion strategies in patients with or at risk for disease
(e.g. diabetes counselling, vascular risk reduction, smoking cessation in asthma/COPD)
The ambulatory care /MCT rotation may include traditional clinics at any of the major teaching sites, specialty physician offices willing to supervise residents in their clinic, and/or full-day outreach clinics that are within a 1-hour drive of Edmonton. The intent is for a resident to do 1 to no more than 4 different specialty areas during a given 2-week rotation and 2 (full day) MCT rotations.
The expectation is to complete a minimum of four 1/2 day AMB clinics and one 1 day MCT experience each week in addition to your Thursday AHD.

The CIM program office will coordinate a schedule for your clinics (electcim@ualberta.ca).
Welcome to your R3 ambulatory clinic rotation. This document will go through some of the basic expectations and offer some suggestions to make your rotation more valuable.
(in addition to the usual professionalism expected of every resident)
Complete a minimum of 6 half-day clinics per week in addition to your academic half-day
Complete 1 EPA for each half-day clinic
Show up to clinics booked and do so on time
Book at least your first two weeks of clinics PRIOR to the start of the block
Contact the specialty program coordinator to book clinics prior to showing up for the clinic
Book clinics early (ideally several weeks in advance) as many clinics will fill up and some physicians will change their clinic structure (such as book more new patients) if they know they have a resident that day
The Alberta Internal Medicine Residents website contains links to contact information for a wide variety of clinics at different sites throughout the city
You can do clinics at any of the sites
If there is a clinic in another field outside of Internal Medicine that you think is valuable to attend for your planned career path (such as thoracic surgery clinics if you are interested in respirology or general surgery clinics if you are interested in GI) they are also allowed, as long as you complete 1 EPA for each half day clinic
Consider doing several of the same types of clinics in a row; you may find you reinforce your knowledge better this way
Thank you and enjoy your rotation.
