Certain rotations include a written exam at the end of your rotation (e.g. Hematology, Cardiology, Respirology, Nephrology, Infection Disease, and Endocrinology). These are formative exams, and are intended to help you with self-assessment and directed studying.
The virtual annual online MCQ examination takes place annually, as part of Academic Half Day.

Only R2s will participate in an in-training oral exam. The R2 exam will focus on oral examination skills. The exams are mainly for your learning but if you struggle with it, the program may ask you to meet with a faculty member to go over your approach and/or do a repeat exam.
R2 residents will be excused for one hour from half-day to attend this oral exam.
Residents will meet the examiner on Zoom.
Two Management Cases (~12 minutes each): The examiner will ask the resident to begin with the management oral provided. The resident will have approximately 2-3 minutes to read the stem and then the resident will have 10 minutes to go through the case. The examiner may interrupt you at times to provide information or move you on.
Test Interpretation (15 minutes): The program will provide two ECG's of varying difficulty and another imaging and/or lab investigation for the resident to interpret.
The examiner will not give you any feedback until the examination has finished. The feedback should be constructive. The intent of these examinations is to guide the resident towards improvement, and the time to receive that guidance is early on in their residency, rather than several months before the real examination!
If you have any concerns about how your oral went, feel free to email Dr. Strand at acstrand@ualberta.ca
Note: If a resident scores borderline or fail in the Overall Evaluation section, the program may arrange for a repeat exam or other resources.
Good luck!
