Office of the Judge Advocate General Internship
2025 info session Monday, March 31, 2025, in person and virtual, 12 noon in LC113.
The OJAG and the University of Alberta Faculty of Law offers a credited, unpaid internship for law students in the fall and winter semesters.
There will be an in-person and virtual information session on Monday, 31 March 2025, 12 noon in LC113. Students interested in the OJAG internship or learning more about the work of the OJAG generally are encouraged to attend.
Interns will assist the OJAG mandate of delivering legal advice to the Canadian Armed Forces and Department of National Defence. Our work must be independent, operationally focused, and solution-oriented in all areas of military law (military justice, administrative law, and operational law).
Interns earn three credits for a successfully completed semester. We will select up to two interns per semester, with each completing 75 hours of work. Interns report to the Assistant Judge Advocate General for the Western Region, whose office is located at Canadian Forces Base Edmonton. Location of work is flexible with some minimal in-person attendance at the office required. Duties may include:
Conducting research and drafting position papers and pointed advice to commanders in areas of military law for use in military operations;
Drafting pre-charge and pre-hearing legal advice for the chain of command for disciplinary incidents involving members of the Canadian Armed Forces;
Reviewing career-related administrative decisions; and
Drafting responses to claims by or against the Crown.
Requirements:
Be a second or third year law student at the University of Alberta during the internship;
Have strong communication skills;
Have strong legal research skills;
Be able to work collaboratively; and

Cover letter of no more than 800 words, explaining your interest in the internship and which semester you prefer;

Official or unofficial copies of current transcripts (including degrees prior to law) – Winter 2025 grades required; and
One reference letter (academic or employment).
Interviews will take place virtually, shortly after the application deadline. If selected, you will be manually registered in the course.
