V = Vocational
E = Education
T = Training
In essence, alternative pathways to gaining units for the HSC and/or training while at school for future career pathways.
School Based VET – eg VET subjects studied on campus at Trinity
TVET – TAFE delivered subjects, studied off campus at either Wollongbar or Lismore TAFE Campuses
Manufacturing and Engineering – 2 Units
Early Childhood Education & Care – 2 Units
Entertainment – 2 Units
Hospitality (Kitchen Operations) – 2 Units
Work Studies (not VET but 2 Unit BEC NESA course)
NOTE : In most cases students would only choose ONE School Based VET course as part of their 12 Preliminary Units
TVET Courses are offered at two local campus locations – Wollongbar and Lismore
TAFE course are both BDC and BEC depending upon the course chosen
TAFE Course cost $$$$ - again depends upon the course chosen
Most involve a ½ day of attendance at TAFE on a Wed afternoon
In most cases students only choose ONE TVET course
These are available, but you must have an employer lined up. The school does not find this for you
Negotiations start in Term 4 of Yr 10 and the idea is to set this up so the student can commence at the start of Yr 11
A traineeship is the simpler of the two and gains you a qualification or part qualification (Statement Of Attainment)
A SBA (Apprenticeship) means you complete the first year of an Apprenticeship over Yr 11-12. It involves one day of work and one day at TAFE each week.
School Based VET is cheaper than TVET and no travel involved
TVET offers a wider range of courses
What type of path am I on eg : ATAR Path or NON-ATAR pathway ?
VET can compliment both pathways
Several students have achieved high ATAR’s doing VET Subjects
Students doing an ATAR Pathway can achieve very high results in VET courses eg Entertainment in 2016/2017
Students doing a NON-ATAR pathway can select work based units and combine this with 2 Unit Work Studies to lessen the workload and still meet NESA requirements
