There is a question often asked by the sceptical student that reads along the lines of 'Why do i take English class if i already speak the language?'.
This is a question that has puzzled me for some time because i know English class to be valuable, but I didn't yet know how to explain why it is valuable. Finding the answer to this question has been an object of serious speculation because English as a subject means a lot to me. Now i have the answer. English class in not really about speaking English, it's about learning how to use it. The difference between speaking, and comprehensively. understanding English is bit like the difference between knowing how to eat a pie and knowing how to make one. Here is where my love of English meets with where i can explain it. English, particularly as it is taught at Trinity, is where we, the students, are given the ability to find true beauty and meaning in words. We are taught to appreciate the great and gossamer worlds constructed by writes who wield language like a powerful precise tool. In English we are taught to use language as an art form through which to explore concepts and ideas and express ourselves.
The English teachers at Trinity are encouraging, intelligent, proactive people who understand their field. As well as giving us the skills we need, they encourage us to read and write for pleasure, to challenge ourselves and to see ourselves as free, creative people
