English Standard

English Standard is designed for all students to increase their expertise in English and consolidate their English literacy skills in order to enhance their personal, social, educational and vocational lives. The students learn to respond to and compose a wide variety of texts in a range of situations in order to be effective, creative and confident communicators.

Standard English - Year 11

For the Year 11 English Standard course students are required to:

Complete 120 indicative hours
Complete the common module as the first unit of work
Complete Modules A and B.

Assessments (Weightings+modes) Advanced and Standard

The requirements stated by NESA for the Standard and Advanced courses are the same, as follows, but the individual Assessment Tasks will vary between each course.

(Year 11) - Maximum of 3

Minimum weighting 20% Maximum weighting 40%

Only 1 may be a formal written exam - 30%
1 must be multimodal reading, writing + one other mode

HSC (Year 12) - Maximum of 4

Minimum weighting 10%

Maximum weighting 40%

Only 1 may be formal written exam - usually the Trial Exam
1 must focus on the ‘Craft of Writing’ (creative writing)
1 must be multimodal

An EXAM is defined as: unseen within a time frame

Should I do English Standard?

I have performed satisfactorily in Year 10 English
I am planning to go to university OR I am quite likely to go to university, I’m not sure
I am not that keen on Shakespeare, I prefer more modern texts
My Y10 teacher has recommended I study the Standard Course and I have a C or low B for Y10 English
I need assistance in developing my extended writing
I know that speaking tasks are compulsory in senior English
I am prepared for homework and independent study
