Reading

At Pebsham Primary Academy, we believe that books and a encouraging a love of reading opens a child's world, mind and imagination. We want all our children to find books they love and want to read. We believe that every child should be able to read confidently, fluently, and to access a wide range of texts to help deepen their understanding of the world around them. This, alongside, exposing our children to high-quality and engaging stories will promote a love of reading and the escapism it can offer.

Our Reading Spine

Our reading curriculum begins with a clear reading spine which ensures that our children are exposed to a wide range of texts from EYFS all the way through to Year 6.

Whole Class Reading

Once children have been taught to read through our phonics programme they move on to our whole class reading model. The texts children are exposed to have been chosen for their rich vocabulary and engaging content. Each book has a different concept and theme and the children learn the skills needed to be fluent and successful readers. Over the course of the reading cycle, children will learn skills such as clarifying and summarising, predicting and questioning, using their prior knowledge and imagining.

Accelerated Reading

Through our 'Accelerated Reader' program, children are able to visit our fantastic library and spend time looking at and finding books they love. Each morning, children calmly sit down in their classrooms with their book and spend quality time reading and becoming fully immersed in their chosen story or non-fiction text. After they have read their book, they grab a laptop or iPad and independently take a quiz to make sure they have fully understood what they have read - this also helps the teachers to know their next steps.

At the end of each day, teachers read to their classes which gives all our children the opportunity to listen to and enjoy stories they may not be able to read themselves.
