'There is freedom waiting for you, on the breezes of the sky.

And you ask, "What if I fall?"  Oh, but my darling, what if you fly?'

Term 6 - 'On Our Doorstep'

Our whole school theme of ‘ON OUR DOOORSTEP’ unites us once more as Geographers exploring the great British coastline, discovering areas of interest near us and how human activities have shaped our local environment.

Nursery will be exploring the whole school theme 'On Our Doorstep' by exploring the question 'Where do we live?' And reception will explore ‘What is good about living by the sea?’. They will be exploring our local area, including looking at maps of Ore Village and Hastings. Children will also learn about coastal life and how it is different to people who live further inland.

Year 1 & 2 will be investigating ‘Lighthouses’. They will be developing their understanding of what a lighthouse is, using a range of sources to identify where they are located and how they have changed over the years. Later in the term they will zoom in on lighthouses near us, identifying key features to compare and contrast Hastings and Dungeness.

Year 3 & 4 will be investigating the RNLI (Royal National Lifeboat Institution) and the heart wrenching story of the Mary Stanford disaster. Children will compare the work of the RNLI and the work of Mountain Rescue teams and the geographical differences in landscapes they support. Using their understanding, children will conclude the term debating whether the RNLI should become our fourth funded emergency service.

Year 5 & 6 will be delving into ‘Hastings at War’. Children will be using a range of geographical and historical sources to explore the impact of WW1 and WW2 on Hastings, and how it has shaped the town we know and love today. Ultimately, answering the question ‘How did Hastings Adapt to War?’

Keep an eye out for knowledge organisers and curriculum newsletters posted on your child’s dojo page to see even more of what we will be up to!

As we all grab our geographers atlases, globes and magnifying glasses and get stuck into ‘ON OUR DOOORSTEP’ we hope you can have interesting conversations with your children about the geographical features on our doorstep, and the human and physical geography of our local area.
