In strand 1 of Criterion E you are annotating drawings to show areas in your product that you would change to make it easier to commercially produce.
In strand 2 you will create annotated presentation drawings of the redesigned product.
In strand 3 your will create technical drawings and a bill of materials.
Criterion E needs to be developed in tandem with criterion F. As the prototype is redesigned to become a commercial product, the design of the product will limit the choices of commercial production processes.
For example: If a part of the product is to be mass-produced using blow-moulding, the design of the part must be adapted to be hollow-formed and should be designed in a way that would allow it to be released from a mould. An example of a product that is blow-moulded is a plastic soft-drinks bottle.
If the commercial product is to be batch-produced, and comprises both standard components and customized options, some parts would need to be designed to be manufactured using a repeatable process, for example, using jigs or templates. Other parts would need to be designed to fit on to these standardized parts, while having the flexibility to be adapted to the customer’s needs. Examples of customized products include fashion items (shirts, jeans and trainers) and furniture.
