E-Prescribing Controlled Substances
E-prescribing Controlled Substances for Residents Without a DEA/License:
First, please sign all other orders (labs, imaging, other meds), then place the order for the controlled medication so that it is the only item in the queue to be signed by the attending
Change Authorizing Provider in EPIC to the precepting attending with whom you staffed your patient
Select the correct pharmacy as documented in the patient's pain contract
PEND the order for the Authorizing Provider (your attending) to sign
Have the Authorizing Provider go into the patient's chart and sign the prescription order
For those of you who already have your DEA and license, you can easily e-prescribe using Duo on your smart phone.
Below is a sample draft you can use when discussing this change with patients to help explain the importance of e-prescribing:
Did you know we can now send your controlled substance prescriptions, such as your pain medications, electronically?
This is a great change because:
Your pharmacy will get your prescription quicker, which means less time waiting at the pharmacy!
You won't have to worry about picking up or losing your paper prescription
It decreases prescription errors which means less paperwork and time between our clinic and your pharmacy
It also helps make it harder for those who try to change or create fake paper prescriptions, for illegal use
