Female Sterilization

Female Sterilization:

Female sterilization is antithetical to Catholic health care; however, providers want to facilitate the best care for patients according to their wishes, and to train residents in sterilization procedures.

Sterilization is not a service available to patients who have a clinic contract as their only health coverage; patients must have active state Medicaid or commercial insurance with sterilization coverage in order to be sterilized.  Women with Emergency Medicaid can only be sterilized at the time of repeat cesarean section at an outside institution, since sterilization is not a covered benefit of Emergency Medicaid.

FYI -- Any NEW patient referrals from outside clinics (MCPN, Salud, Clinica, Tepeyac, etc.) for the purpose of family planning services or sterilization will be (and always have been) declined.

Established Seton Women’s Center patients:

Patients desiring sterilization at time of repeat cesarean delivery can be scheduled for delivery at PSL, as long as there is active Insurance/Medicaid/Emergency Medicaid coverage for cesarean delivery.  These should be scheduled with the assistance of the OB chief, and availability and timing of delivery at PSL will depend on Seton faculty availability.  For Medicaid and Emergency Medicaid, there must be a valid Med-178 signed at least 30 days, but not more than 180 days, before the procedure.

Patients desiring interval sterilization and who have active Insurance/Medicaid that covers sterilization have these options: Essure or laparoscopic sterilization with Seton faculty at PSL, Dr. Victor Dabelea at PSL (will see patient for counseling/preop visit, surgery, and postop check), or choosing a provider from their insurance list who performs sterilization.
