Cross-Cover Call Tips for Vasectomy Patients:
Pain:
-Take ibuprofen 800 mg every 8 hours and acetaminophen 1000 mg every 8 hours. Recommended: alternate each medicine every 4 hours.
-If they are still having moderate or severe pain despite this regimen in addition to ice and compression, they should be seen the following day in clinic to evaluate for other complications
Bleeding:
-Most bleeding will be internal (hematoma): avoid heavy lifting, wear jock supporter. Will reabsorb on its own but we can see in clinic if concerning or getting larger.
Swelling:
-Mild, bilateral swelling is usually normal. Use ice, ibuprofen and Tylenol as above. Wear a jock strap.
-Focal swelling with pain can be due to infection. Diffuse swelling with pain can be due to hematoma (above).
Fever or pus:
-Evaluate for evidence of sepsis or need for emergent evaluation. If evidence of sepsis, send to ER.
-Otherwise, evaluate next day in clinic.
