Lifelong Readers
Promoting Lifelong Reading
Choice Reading is a fundamental part of English at MCI, particularly in Grades 9 and 10.
Students are encouraged in Grade 9 onwards to develop independent reading habits through self-selecting novels that will create the foundation for lifelong reading habits and participating in differentiated book clubs.
English classrooms have "book nooks" aka classroom libraries so students can access a range of recent texts to read and submit as part of a reading log. We work in conjunction with the Library Learning Commons to ensure students have access to a wealth of reading.
These texts are featured in regular "book talks" and independant reading is part of daily English class.
Book Clubs based on student choice are also a key feature of Grade 9 and 10 courses that carry through senior courses as well.
Make Reading a Habit
Having a reading habit prepares you for high school and beyond. It also reduces stress, is relaxing and increases learning. Just 15-20 min a day makes a HUGE difference.
Sample Reading Log
All Grade 9 and 10 students have a reading log and time to read in class each day.
This reading log allows students to develop a reading habit and appreciate a wide variety of diverse texts.
Many of our Grade 9 and 10 students will read upwards of 10 novels in a semester as part of choice reading!
