Welcome to Family Studies 

Family Studies courses provide students with essential knowledge and skills that are applicable in all areas of their lives. Courses in family studies encourage students to develop important life skills, critical and creative thinking skills, and transferable skills. Students who enjoy practical hands-on experiences would enjoy our courses.

Student FAQ's

Q:  Are there any prerequisites for Family Studies courses:

A:  NO!  All of our courses are available to all students.  


Q:  Do I get to cook/bake in Family Studies?

A:  YES!!  All of our foods related courses have food labs, including Gr.9 Family Studies, Gr.10 Food & Nutrition, and Gr.12 Personal Life Management.  The course with the most food labs is the Food & Nutrition course as this course focuses on the topic.  


Q: I heard that I have to take home the “robo-baby” in Working with Children. Do I have to?  

A: Grade 11 Working with Children offers students the opportunity to experience caring for an infant through taking home the Real Care Baby infant simulator. Students who choose not to are offered an alternative assignment.

Q: Do I need to know how to sew to take the Fashion course?

A:  No! Students with all levels of ability (including no knowledge) can take this course. Those who do not know how to sew will learn. Those who do know how to sew will improve their existing skills. 


Q:  Why should I take Gr.12 Personal Life Management?

A:  This course is geared towards students who will be going off to post-secondary education or into the workforce.  It teaches students personal finance, time management, and goal setting. Students learn about budgeting, saving, and investing strategies, as well as techniques for prioritizing tasks and achieving personal and professional goals. 


Q:  Is there a practical component in the Working with Infants & Young Children course?


A:  Yes!  We send students out to local elementary schools to help out in kindergarten or grade one classes twice a month.
