Course descriptions
Grade 9 courses
AMB/AMW 1O1
Experienced Grade 9 Band
This course is for students who have experience on their instrument. It is acknowledged that the extent and depth of experience varies among students from different schools. It is strongly recommended that students who have one or more years of experience on their instrument take this course. This course is open to students who play brass, woodwind, or percussion instruments.
AMI 1O2
Beginner Grade 9 Band
This course is for students who have no experience on any band instrument. It begins with how to read music, then transitions to the application of this knowledge onto a chosen band instrument. Typically, the choices include flute, clarinet, saxophone, French horn, trumpet, trombone, baritone, and tuba. At the end of this course, students will be prepared to continue their music education in the grade 10 band course.
AMS 1O1
Experienced Grade 9 Strings
This course is for students who have experience on their instrument. The extent of experience varies. One or more years of experience on violin, viola, cello, or double bass will suffice.
Grade 10, 11, and 12 courses
AMI
Band
These courses are open to students who have experience on their band instruments (brass, woodwinds, percussion), and are taught in each successive year. Students are encouraged to take music throughout their high school career.
AMS
Strings
These courses are open to students who have experience on their stringed instruments (violin, viola, cello, double bass), and are taught in each successive year. Students are encouraged to take music throughout their high school career.
Ensembles
Concert Band
This ensemble is a grade 9 – 12 band, and rehearses Tuesdays after school for one hour. In 2023, we competed at the Ontario Band Association Festival, and received a Gold standing, an Overall Outstanding Excellence award, and an invitation to MusicFest Canada.
String Orchestra
This ensemble rehearses Wednesdays after school for one hour. Open to grades 9 – 12, the String Orchestra has been successful at the Ontario Strings Association Festival, earning a Silver standing in 2023, and an invitation to MusicFest Canada.
*In order to be eligible to be in an ensemble, students should be enrolled in an MCI music course.
