Program Description:
A Place Called Home: The Story of German Immigrants from Cincinnati, Ohio to New Ulm, Minnesota 1856-1862:
Illustrated with pictures from the book, the presentation follows young Carolina Beck and her family as they are driven from Cincinnati, Ohio, by rising hostilities toward immigrants and travel by steamboat to New Ulm, Minnesota in 1857. Searching for economic security and the freedom to follow their German customs and traditions, they face challenges learning to survive on the Minnesota frontier. Constructing a house, securing food, building a community and defending their town during the U.S.-Dakota War of 1862 test their courage, persistence and resilience in this coming-of-age story. The author also shares stories from her four-year research and writing journey to create this historical fiction based on memoirs, personal accounts and historical research. Questions and personal stories from the audience are welcomed.
Duration: 90 minutes; presentation, Q & A, book sales and signing.
Target Audience: Ages 12+ tailored to the ages and interests of the audience.
Performer Needs:
Projector and laptop to show PowerPoint slides (no sound required)
Podium and microphone, clicker to advance slides (or she can bring her own clicker)
Auditorium-style seating
2 tables for selling and signing books
Set-up and Take-down Time: 10 minutes setup, if projector, laptop, podium and tables are in place. She will bring the PowerPoint on a flash drive or email it ahead of time to have it put on the laptop. The presentation must be removed from the library's laptop after the program. 15 minutes if she brings her own laptop.
Cost for 2025: $200-$300, depending on travel distance. For destination under 50 miles from Northfield, the fee is $200. For greater distances, the fee is determined by the number of miles traveled. If scheduled programs prevent me from returning to Northfield on the same day, the cost of one night in a hotel will be added to the fee. If more than one nearby library schedules programs, travel costs can be shared.
