Program Descriptions
Perennial Ceremony: Lessons and Gifts from a Dakota Garden talks about gardening, foods, land, climate and the environment. The focus is on the land as our relative and our connection to the land and to each other.
Voices from Pejuhutazizi: Dakota Stories and Storytellers is a collection of stories across five generations within the author's family. This book celebrates storytellers, their stories, and the important role of storytelling.
Grasshopper Girl includes a Dakota tale of Uŋktomi (Spider), one of the trickster stories my mother heard growing up. Grasshopper Girl demonstrates the importance of storytelling and teaches and celebrates Dakota language. The book was featured as one of Nick Jr.'s children's books to celebrate Native American Heritage Month.
Duration for Perennial Ceremony and Voices for Pejuhutazizi: 35-90 minutes (TBD between the library and the author)
Target Audience: Middle school through adults
Duration for Grasshopper Girl book readings: 20-30 minutes; up to five sessions.
Target Audience: K-3rd grade.
Supplies: For larger events: chair, podium, mic, screen/projector with an HDMI connection for PowerPoint. For smaller groups or Grasshopper Girl book readings: No AV equipment is needed
Set-up and Take-down Time: 20 minutes each
Cost for 2026: $500 for 60 minutes plus travel expenses. If doing multiple sessions, it can be negotiated.
