Final Report and Request for Reimbursement Form
Program Description: Nerburn is widely respected for his work exploring Native American culture, spirituality, and the human experience through deeply personal and accessible narratives. His most recognized titles, including Neither Wolf Nor Dog, The Wolf at Twilight, and The Girl Who Sang to the Buffalo, have resonated with readers across generations and backgrounds.
Lone Dog Road: Author Kent Nerburn will speak about his historical fiction novel, Lone Dog Road. The story takes place during the drought-stricken summer of 1950, when two Lakota boys, ages eleven and six, huddle in a boxcar hurtling through the prairie night as they run from a government agent sent to take the younger boy to an Indian boarding school. But what begins as a pursuit soon becomes a complex drama of intersecting lives as the boys make their way across the vast Dakota plains to the pipestone quarries of western Minnesota to replace their great-grandfather's channunpa, or sacred pipe, that was broken by the agent.
Voices in the Stones:This presentation is based on my almost 40 years of living and working among the people of Native
America, with a special focus on my book, Voices in the Stones: Life Lessons from the Native Way.
The program's purpose is to explore some of the core values of Native America that too often go
unnoticed -- values that have been obscured by the mythologizing, pathologizing, and historical
devastation that have been visited upon the Native peoples over the generations; values that I think are
important for all of us to consider as we try to shape a worthy future for our children and our nation.
The program will be one-hour with time for Q and A. It will combine readings from my books, stories
from my experience in Native America, and the sharing of gifts given me by my Native friends.
