Conflict is an important part of plot. Plot just means what happens in the story. (There are usually questions about this on the GED test)

Traditionally, we say that most simple stories have 5 pieces:

This is the background information or beginning of a story. This is where you find out who and what the story is about. It introduces the characters and may hint at the conflict to come.

Not all stories have all five parts. Also, many long stories have subplots, a second, less important story that is related to the main story.
