Conjunctions
We're going to work with conjunctions a bunch this quarter, but we'll start with the three most common/important: but, because, so.
I know that you know these words, but I want to make sure that we're using them correctly before we start writing paragraphs and essays.
- Because explains why something is true.
- But shows a change of direction. It's like U-turn.
- So tells us what happens as a result of something else--in other words, cause and effect.
Here's an easy example:

Here's another example of how you can use all three. We'll look at The House on Mango Street again.
The house on Mango Street isn't perfect, but it is better than their last house.
The house on Mango Street isn't perfect because it is too small.
The house on Mango Street isn't perfect, so the family talks about moving one day.
