Dear Scientists and Assistants,

Each year the students at Walt Whitman  have the opportunity to showcase their unique scientific talents by becoming creative scientists and showcasing their ideas at Walt Whitman’s Science Bonanza.

In order to participate in this very special event, you must complete a Participation Form (click on the words “Participation Form”). You will need your child’s Chromebook to join the Google Classroom.

If your child is interested in learning more about Walt Whitman’s Science Bonanza, please inform us:

           Lori Bookspan: lbookspan@syossetschools.org

           Candace Nupp: cnupp@syossetschools.org

This will allow us to send home their Chromebook with the purpose of logging in and viewing the information in the Google Classroom regarding the Science Bonanza. Your child will be able to bring home their Chromebook as needed during the time leading up to the event.

Please remember to charge and return the Chromebook to school each day for use in the classroom.

Feel free to reach out to us with any further questions.

Thank you for your support!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Bookspan & Ms. Nupp,

Science Mentors

Dear Scientists and Assistants,

Each year the students at Walt Whitman have the opportunity to showcase their unique scientific talents by becoming creative scientists. All of you are already scientists because science is all around us - in very big ways and very small ways.

Good scientists define real-world problems, plan and create solutions, and develop and communicate the best design to solve these real-world problems. These solutions can be displayed through Inventions, Experiments, Consumer Product Review Projects, and Passion Projects.

The Science Bonanza is your opportunity to develop new interests and exhibit your innovative thinking at home with the support from us!

At this year’s Science Bonanza, you will be displaying and demonstrating your unique idea digitally or on a tri-fold board. In order to participate in this very special event, you must complete a Participation Form (click on the words “Participation Form”). Remember all fourth and fifth grade students, MUST participate.

Participation Forms are due: Friday, March 1, 2024

Intent Forms are due: Friday, March 8, 2024

Extra Help: the week of March 4, 2024

Final Projects MUST be completed and submitted by Wednesday, April 3, 2024

Science Bonanza: Thursday April 4, 2024 - during the day for students only 6p.m. - 7 p.m.for participants’families

Additional information is available here. Ways in which to use a digital platform called Book Creator or a 36” x 48” Tri-Fold Display Board, Intent Forms, and Extra Help Dates will be forthcoming.

Every participant needs an adult ‘assistant’ at home to help complete your project. All the ideas, however, are created by YOU! Students may work by themselves, with their sibling(s), or with one other child in their class. If you work in a partnership, all responsibilities must be shared.

Please edit your work with an adult and after you have edited and reviewed your entire project, please complete the Publishing Document.

You are now on your way to becoming an innovator of your own idea. Be creative, be different, but most importantly, have fun!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Bookspan & Ms. Nupp, Science Mentors

Dear Parents & Guardians:

We are pleased to announce that our annual Science Bonanza will be held on Thursday, April 4, 2024. During the school day, the students will present to their peers and from 6 p.m. - 7 p.m., parents and families are invited to join in on the fun!

This event includes both inventions and science projects. It is a noncompetitive event and your child can choose to submit an invention, a science experiment, a consumer review project, or a passion project.

Students are encouraged to engage in the scientific method and create projects based on real-world applications. In order to engage in this inspirational and innovative process, thinking and integrating next generation technologies will lead students to solve everyday problems.

All of the fourth and fifth grade students MUST submit a project as part of their science assessment. Children in kindergarten through third grade are encouraged to participate.

More information from our Science Mentors, Mrs. Bookspan and Ms. Nupp, will be forthcoming!

I look forward to seeing all of the young innovators and scientists exhibiting their scientific talents and expertise.

Sincerely,

Mr. Chad Snyder, Principal
