How does a misophonia trigger impact the testing scores of high school students in Washington state?
A) Does the misophonia trigger have a greater impact on a reading/comprehension assessment or a mathematics assessment?
B) How do the results of part A compare to the perception of the participants of their testing performance?
There is a problem with the way misophonia triggers impact the testing performance of high school students. Despite the average classroom being a place for learning, the common sounds correlated with misophonia are negatively impacting the focus of students in a testing environment. Certain common sounds found in the classroom those with misophonia because, depending on the severity of their syndrome, they have no way of controlling the stimulus. While the underlying cause of misophonia has yet to be discovered, its impact is undeniable. Perhaps a study which investigates misophonia's impact on the performance of 14-18 year old high school students by an experiment could remedy this solution.
A mixed methods approach will be used to conduct this research using both a perception based survey and an experiment. A single-blind experimental procedure will separate participants into either a controlled or experimental group. Each participant will complete either a reading or mathematics assessment. All participants will be given the same perception based survey to assess how well individuals felt they performed on the test. Students who choose to participate in the research will need to submit a parental consent form prior to participation.
If misophonia triggers are found to negatively impact the testing performance of students at Bonney Lake High School, then the average classroom environment should be modified to meet accommodations to lessen triggers. Additionally, this research could prompt further exploration into the little known condition of misophonia otherwise known as Selective Sound Syndrome.
I hypothesize that the misophonia trigger will negatively impact the raw testing scores of the participants. Also, trigger will have a greater impact on the reading/comprehension assessment scores rather than the mathematics assessment scores.
Misophonia (Selective Sound Syndrome)- Condition in which common everyday sounds cause an intense discomfort and emotional reaction from someone with the condition.
Misophonia trigger- Stimulus, most commonly a noise, that causes the emotional reaction of someone with misophonia.
Raw testing score- calculated percentage based solely on an individual's performance and not graded on a curve.
