Artist Statement:
My main idea with these pieces was to create a structurally sound wire sculpture. Specifically, I wanted to focus on getting better at the fishhook technique. I also wanted to work on doing one section at a time when creating my wire sculpture. This helped me to be less overwhelmed by the project.
To create these works, I used 18 gauge annealed wire, wire cutters, and needle nose pliers. I chose 18 gauge wire because I didn't find it too difficult, and I liked the look of the black wire. I used the wire cutters to break up the wire. I used the needle nose pliers to use the fishhook. This technique involves taking the pliers and turning them over in your hands, which creates a hook in the wire. This was the main technique I used when creating my pieces.
To get to my final piece, I did a lot of practice with the wire. This is why I created the 10-link tower and the cube. This helped me get used to using wire and the fishhook technique. This practice helped me a lot with the final project and it helped me feel more comfortable with the medium. I chose to create a shoe for the final project because I thought it would be a fun challenge instead of creating a more basic shape. Throughout the unit, I mainly focused on practice and getting used to the medium, which helped me with my final project.
