Artist Statement:

For these pieces, my main focus was on perspective and shading. I wanted to use these techniques to make my drawings realistic. I wanted to work on these techniques specifically because they are an important part of realism. I also chose to work on proportions, as they are another important aspect of realism and I wanted to make the drawings as realistic as possible. I combined these focuses in my final still-life candy drawing.

In my perspective drawings, I used a ruler and a graphite pencil to create the lines. I used the graphite pencil so that I could erase the lines that I ended up not needing, and a ruler so the lines were all straight. For my shaded spheres drawing, I used watercolor paper so that the other materials I used didn't ruin the paper. On one of the spheres, I used colored pencils so that I could practice using them for realism. I did the same for marker and watercolor. In my last sphere, I used watercolor and colored pencil, as I wanted to practice combining materials. For my candy still-life, I used colored pencils. I chose to use colored pencils because they are good for blending and layering. I used them by starting with a layer of color, and layering it up until I got the color I wanted. I also added other colors as I layered, so I could create the shade that I wanted.

While creating my perspective drawing, I relied on using my ruler for the placement of lines. For the spheres, I looked at reference photos to think about where the light source would be in my drawing. For my candy still-life, I used a printed photo of the candy that I had taken. I separated both pieces of paper into 4 sections, to create a vague grid outline to help with proportions. I chose to position my candy the way that I did because I wanted the drawing to have things on all sides, not just in the center. I used color the way that I did to attempt to represent the color of the candy in the photo in a realistic way. Overall, I made the choices that I made in hopes of creating a realistic representation of the candy in my photo.
