Art History Inspired Project

Van Gogh and Frankenthaler Lanscape

Acrylic paint on canvas

12" x 18"

Artist Statement:

For this project, my goal was to create a painting that was inspired by Vincent Van Gogh and Helen Frankenthaler. I wanted the piece to look like their work, but be original. That was my main goal with this piece.

I used acrylic paint on canvas for this painting. I used it for the sky so that I could create a similar look to Van Gogh's skies. I used blue and green because he primarily used blues and yellows, and it created a similar color palette to some of his works. I used watered-down acrylic paint for the bottom, as that is what Helen Frankenthaler did in her work. I used black acrylic paint to put a line in the middle, so I could provide more contrast between the two sides.

To create the work, I looked at some of Van Gogh and Frankenthaler's work, so I could draw inspiration from them. I then sketched the layout. While making the piece, I experimented a lot with color. I used color the way I did so that it would look similar to the color palettes of the artists I chose. I chose to split the painting down the middle so I could highlight each of the artists separately, and provide a contrast between their works. Overall, I made the choices that I did so I could create a look similar to my chosen artists in my painting.
