Artist Statement:

For these pieces, I explored pure contour. In all the works, I made sure to focus on making clean and clear lines. I drew from life so that I could improve on drawing with a physical reference and not from a photo. I focused the most on making my lines accurate. I wanted to make sure that I drew the shoe and the hand exactly as I saw it, without adding anything from my imagination. I wanted to do this to train my brain for these types of artworks, and so that I can improve my drawing from a reference.

For all of these pieces, I used graphite pencil on drawing paper. I used a graphite pencil because they show contour lines the best. I used an object for reference, and drew from life, looking at the object the whole time and making sure the lines were accurate. I first sketched lightly so that I could figure out where I wanted everything, and then pressed harder with the pencil to darken the lines and make them cleaner. I used them to achieve the look of pure contour the best. I also used the pencil to have some of the lines a bit lighter than the dark lines to show which lines were the most prominent.

When creating the pieces, I drew the art by solely looking at the object itself. I used the objects as a reference and drew from life. For the hand drawing, I used my non dominant hand as a reference, and for the shoes I drew one of my shoes (which is the same in all of them). For my hand drawing, I chose to pose my hand the way that I did so I could really focus on the lines in the hand, and make sure that I drew the rubber band accurately. I chose to draw the shoes I did because they had a lot of lines, which helped me to break the shoe into shapes, as well as provided more detail I could add to the blind contour to fill the shoe. Overall, I hoped to create pieces that really highlighted the contour lines, and represented the lines of the object accurately.
