Loughborough: Digital image processing and its importance in Engineering
Digital image processing is a widespread technology that is used in many different industries. We use it to improve what we can see, and our perception of a scene. We use it to support automation in industry and autonomous decision making in sectors such as Engineering, Science, Medicine, Industry, Graphic Arts, Multimedia and the Security sector. We also use image processing to push the boundaries of understanding, and to have a lot of fun! In this talk, I will introduce you to the basics of image processing and I will describe how it is used across a multitude of engineering sectors.

Sigmund Freud Private University: A different TOK approach than you are probably used to
Is there an Easter Bunny? And how can we tell? Erich Eder, a former IB Biology teacher, is now a professor at SFU MED and has had the experience of a long-standing legal battle with an esoteric humbug company. This has led him to engage with the foundations of the epistemology of natural science.
Central European University (CEU): Grief, Time, and Queer Activism in Hungary
Grief and loss have been central to queer identities and politics. Yet their dynamics and meanings have mostly been explored within the (largely North American) “West.” In this talk I ask what happens when queer loss and grief, and their personal and political effects, emerge amidst the arc of historical transformation elsewhere? I follow two trails of queer politics in postsocialist Hungary, from dreams of personal and political “normality” in the early 1990s, through growing disillusionment in the early 2000s, to grief, and anger at the current Orbán regime’s brutal homophobia. Drawing on anthropological approaches to emotions and their politics, and queer thinking on the politics of “disidentification,” I argue that we can, and should, broaden our current understandings of queer grief and its effects.
