Students working on their group activity
Teaching methods in Education High School (EHS) is quite unique and rare to be found in Indonesia because the teacher in EHS is a pre-service teacher (PST), College of Education's students of UST. The majority of PST already use students-centered learning including my cooperating PST, Jean. The learning model that commonly used is 5E (Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, Evaluate), but they use another model sometimes.Â
The teaching methods in the science class engage the students to active with group activity. In group activity, students can exchange their opinion and collaborating for the task that already given, make the students active during the lesson and the lesson become students-centered.
The teaching methods in EHS also categorized with offline class and online class. Offline class conducted on the students class. In another side, online class facilitated students to learn from home.
Jean telling me if usually she utilize the digital materials like interactive canva presentation that presented with Smart TV in the class. She also use virtual laboratory during the online classes to made the students understand about The Parts of Microscope.
But, during my stay, our supervising lecture, Ma'am Baltazar asking Jean to made a traditional media innovation to be applied. Jean use visual aids and demonstration media that hand-made. The visual aids presenting the form of biological hierarchy of ecosystem, made with cartolina paper. Meanwhile, the demonstration materials used to asking the students about what they know related to object that demonstrated, made with print-out materials that stick on the colored paper. Jean also use printed materials to support the students' group activity. I learnt a lot when we prepare the traditional media together, made me having idea and inspiration for the Grand Demonstration.

Online class with Google Meet
The science class in EHS having various source of learning. The PSTs use textbook from Phoenix Publisher and Rex Publisher as their main sources of learning. But, they also search the materials in internet to made the learning more detail.
The technology that use is quite various, having differences between offline class and online class. The technology that use during the offline class usually is Smart TV that connected with laptop or tab to show the presentation or quiz. Meanwhile, at the online class, they use Google meet as their platform, and presentation and virtual laboratory as their media.
They also having Learning Management System (LMS) that similar with Google Classroom, but it's exclusive for the EHS members only. It can be accessed by PSTs and the students. The system already integrated, made the PSTs easier to managing the task and tracking the grade of the students.
The principal of EHS, Assoc. Prof. Marielyn C. Quintana, PhD., already told us if the assessment at the closing stage of the lesson is necessary to be applied in EHS. The assessment having function to checking the students' understanding of the materials. This method already used since after the pandemic to overcome the learning-gap that happens among the students after the pandemic of COVID-19. Usually, the assessment will consist of 10 number of questions with free format depending on the PST.
Jean applied the summative assessment after the lesson in the form of Exit Ticket. The Exit Ticket consist of essay quiz that must be answered by the students individually. The Exit Ticket checking the students understanding about the materials, connecting the materials with the real world problem, has benefit to increase students' critical thinking.
