Why study Media Studies?
Choosing Media Studies will allow you to develop your understanding of the media world around you, giving you opportunity to study how our perceptions are shaped by what we watch, read, play or listen to. Throughout the course, you will develop critical thinking, decision making and research skills which you will apply in both theory and practical assessments .
What will I study?
Throughout the GCSE, you will explore media theory and products, looking at media language, representation, industries and audiences. The following media forms are studied: newspapers, television, music videos, social media, advertising and marketing, film, video games, radio and magazines.
In addition to analysing media products, you will also create a media production for an intended audience, applying and developing your knowledge and understanding of media language and representation. This will give you the opportunity to pursue your own media interests and develop your practical skills.
How will I be assessed?
70% of GCSE: Two written exams (1 hour 30 minutes each) exploring media language, representation, industries and audiences.
You will study a broad range of media products such as Spectre, The Archers, The Guardian, The Sun, GQ, Luther, Friends, The IT Crowd, This Girl Can campaign, Pokémon Go etc. The exams will also include music video and online media analysis so you will study artists such as Katy Perry, Bruno Mars, Taylor Swift and Michael Jackson etc.
30% of GCSE: Creating an individual media production. Tasks include creating a website or a sequence from a new television programme, creating a music video or website for a new band, creating print based marketing material for a new film or creating a new magazine.
