Why study Dance?

Dance is an empowering and expressive form of non-verbal communication which enables the development of creative, imaginative, physical, emotional and intellectual capacities. The new BTEC Technical Award in Dance will enable you to explore a range of dance styles and professional works.

The study of Dance contributes to pupils’ aesthetic and social development as it promotes fitness and wellbeing. During the course pupils will improve their confidence, self-esteem, body awareness, sensitivity to others and teamwork.

 BTEC Dance also provides a pathway to study subjects such as Dance, Performing Arts or PE in further education or at a specialist vocational college. 

There are many career options available in the dance industry including: Choreographer, Teacher, Performer, Community Practitioner, Freelancer, SEN Artist, Dance Film Director, Pilates Instructor, Nutritionist, Lecturer, Dance Critic, Set Designer, Arts Officer and many more. 

In addition, the skills acquired through the study of BTEC Dance such as problem-solving, self-discipline, motivation of others, communication and expression are transferable to almost any career and further studies. 

How will I be assessed?

The subject content includes both practical and theoretical lessons. 

Component 1 (30%): Exploring the Performing Arts

• Explore three performance styles, creative intentions and purpose

Investigate how practitioners create and influence what’s performed.

Component 2 (30%): Developing Skills and Techniques in the Performing Arts

• Take part in workshops, classes and rehearsals

Gain physical, interpretative and rehearsal skills

Apply these skills in performance.

Component 3 (40%): Performing to a Brief

• Review their creative process using an ideas and skills log

Perform a piece to their chosen audience

Reflect on their performance in an evaluation report.

There is no written exam on this course. 

This BTEC qualification is the equivalent to 1 GCSE.

Extra-curricular 

As a BTEC Dance student you will also have the opportunity to be involved in the following trips and events:

This course requires students to perform to a live audience and participate in school events and school productions. 

Students choosing this course are expected to attend Dance Academy after school on a Thursday.
