Why study Drama?

GCSE Drama encourages creativity, collaboration with your peers and also builds confidence. As a student of Drama you will develop a wide range of performance and analytical skills that will support progression to further study of Drama and a wide range of other subjects.

What will I study?

The course requires students to articulate how they would perform in certain roles, and design for certain scenes, putting practical work at the heart of each specification. You will gain skills in the following areas:

How will I be assessed?

Component 1 – Written Examination: 1 hour 30 minutes

The exam will consist of questions relating to a play you have studied and you will also need to write about a live performance you have seen (40%).

Component 2 – Devising: Requires students to work collaboratively on creating and performing a piece of original theatre. There is also a written portfolio with this practical work, whereby students analyse and evaluate their process and final performance (40%).

Component 3 – Text: Memorising and performing two script extracts that students present to a visiting examiner in Year 11 (20%). As part of the course students will receive many opportunities to perform and see live performances through visits to the theatre and various workshops.

Students choosing this course are expected to attend Drama Club on a Tuesday after-school.

"GCSE Drama has given me the confidence to perform in front of an audience. I’ve performed in assembly and in the production of Westside Story and I think that this will give me skills that I will be able to use for the rest of my life".
