The Assignments tool enables instructors to collect, review, and assess student work in a flexible, organized manner. It supports a variety of submission formats, including file uploads, text responses, and external links, making it well-suited for essays, reports, presentations, and other open-ended tasks.
Instructors can set availability dates, deadlines, and late submission policies, while providing feedback through inline comments, rubrics, or multimedia responses. The Assignments tool is ideal for managing your assessment of student work.
Add the assignments you'll use to review student work and give feedback
It's helpful to build in batches in Brightspace. Follow the process in the video below to add your assignments.
NOTE: In Brightspace, the menu "Choose from Grade," mentioned in the video at 1:05, has been renamed to "Edit or Link to Existing." Its functionality remains the same.
Click Assignments from the navbar
Click the "New Assignment" button
Add the title
Add instructions in the text box (you can also do this later on)
Click "Ungraded" for the option to associate the assignment with grades, or leave it ungraded
Note: If you choose to enter a "Score Out Of" rather than linking the item with an existing Grades item, the new assignment will be automatically added to Grades by default. This is why we recommend setting up the Grades area first and then linking your assignments as you create them.
Use the expandable boxes to the right of the screen to configure the assignment.
This is where you will go to...
Set when students will/will not be able to see the assignment
Expand Availability Dates & Conditions.
Set exceptions for certain students
Expand Availability Dates & Conditions and click Special Access.
Choose the type of submission (e.g., file upload)
Expand Submissions & Completion
Make it a group assignment
Expand Submissions & Completion (you'll need to have created Groups)
