You Asked

Where are my courses?

Similar to NYU Classes, faculty create their course sites after they are scheduled by the registrar in SIS/Albert.

All courses become available to create in Brightspace one week after registration for that term begins.  For example, if Fall registration begins April 25th, Fall Brightspace courses will be available to create in Brightspace starting May 2nd.

You can find instructions for creating your course site in the "Begin" tutorial labeled "Find."

Can I create one Brightspace course site that combines more than one section?

Yes!  Similar to NYU Classes, Brightsapce also supports this structure.  There are full details on the Create Course Site tool and how to combine mutliple sections into one site on the Service Link Article for Create Course Site

How do I pull grades from Brightspace into Albert?

Please note: Final grades for Stern graduate courses should never be released to students in Brightspace.  This helps ensure students complete course evaluations before seeing their final grades.

Final grades can be pulled from Brightspace into Albert, but it's not a straightforward process, and manual entry into Albert is preferred by most.  However, you can find detailed instructions for the process here.

Were NYU Classes courses migreated to Brightspace?

Good news! Courses from Winter 2019 to Fall 2021 were automatically migrated to Brightspace as a Reference Site.  NYU Classes was retired in September 2023, and is no longer available to the NYU community.  All NYU Classes data was archived, and may be available by request.  More details.

How do I send a message to my students?

There are two main ways to send a message to your class.  We have created instructions for using both!

The announcement method is preferred because it will leave a record of the message in the Announcements tool and on the course homepage, so students who joined the class before the message was authored would still see it!  Announcements will generate an email notification to students by default, although students do have the option of disabling email notifications (but this is rare!).

If you would still prefer to send a message directly to students' inboxes, using the Email Classlist button in the Classlist tool is the best option.

How do I add my TF to my course (or another instructor/student)?

You can do this via the Classlist tool.  We have created a short tutorial in the Begin module showing how to do this.

Please note: students who have registered for you via Albert class will automatically be added to the Classlist.  This can take up to several hours to sync from Albert during registration periods. Manually added TFs, instructors, and students will have the status of "manual" added to their role to help you distinguish between members of the Albert roster and those manually added to Brightspace through the Classlist.

Why does my PowerPoint/Word/Excel file only display as a PDF?  Can my students access the original file?

When adding a file to the Brightspace Content tool from your computer (or if it was migrated from NYU Classes), Brightspace will do its best to show a preview of the file to you and your students right on the page.  However, this preview is not the original file, it's just a PDF copy of the original.

To retrieve the original file in the instructor view:

Use the horizontal three-dot icon in the top right corner of the page and choose "Download" from the drop-down menu.

To retrieve the original file in the student view:

On the top right corner of the page, find the cloud & down arrow icon and click it.

Why am seeing a "refused to connect" error message or a blank screen on my migrated content links from NYU Classes?

If this content was originally in NYU Classes as a link to another website, it may have migrated to Brightspace in a format that Brightsapce has trouble displaying with its current settings.  Fortunately, there is an easy fix to quickly edit this setting causing the problem.

You can see more details on adding weblinks to Brightspace in our Create New tutorial for the Content tool.

I can't find my Practice Site / Can I have have another practice site?

All faculty should automatically see a practice site in Brightspace.  Practice sites are a good place to experiment, or to create course content that you can later copy into your actual teaching course sites.

If you don't see a practice site or would like another one, go to your Brightspace Home Page and scroll down to find the "My Practice Sites" widget where you can create as many as you need.

Why do I see past courses in Brightspace that were taught in NYU Classes?

NYU IT has automatically migrated many courses from 2019 to the present from NYU Classes to Brightspace in order to provide you with course content that you can copy into your upcoming courses.

You can read more detailed information about course migration here.
